What is the anion gap used for?

The anion gap helps classify metabolic acidosis in emergency and critical care. It is calculated from sodium, chloride and bicarbonate, and is often corrected for albumin because low albumin narrows the apparent gap.

Why do electrolytes convert differently from other tests?

Electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and calcium convert between mEq/L and mmol/L using the ion's valence (charge), not molecular weight alone. That is why they have their own dedicated converters.

What is the difference between eGFR and creatinine clearance?

Both estimate kidney function from creatinine. eGFR (CKD-EPI 2021) is the standard for staging chronic kidney disease, while Cockcroft-Gault creatinine clearance is still used for some medication dosing.
